It can be difficult to put into words who we are - can we do it in interpretive dance? No? Okay then, here is our best crack at it...

We all started out in life with an undeniable passion for the arts, theatre, production and design. What brings us together here at Beyond Repair Dance is our unflinching belief that dance, artistry and illusion makes what we do emotive, memorable and authentic.

BRD Founder & Director Jane Coulston created the company with a mission to broaden audiences watching contemporary dance, that mission has become a lifelong commitment to entertain an eclectic range of audiences. The exclusivity of theatre and particularly contemporary dance is a barrier that needed to broken, each day we work our way further through it and hopefully inspire others to do the same. We embody the dynamic….always.

Jane Coulston - Artistic Director

Originally from Ontario Canada Jane Coulston found her passion for dance at High School in the UK. Previously a gymnast Jane found she preferred the pure artistry and less competitive nature of dance and also discovered her strong interest in choreography.

Jane Studied Dance at Lewisham College and credits it for giving her a strong technical training to pursue a career in dance. Jane then studied at Trinity Laban, and after graduating worked internationally as a dancer and choreographer in New York. She toured with the New Amsterdam Dance Theater for two seasons, and worked as a resident choreographer at Stagedoor Theatre Arts NYC.

Jane founded Beyond Repair Dance alongside her other performance work in 2008, originally a small scale contemporary touring company, Jane decided in 2015 to take the company in a new direction. Jane has an appetite for creating , spectacle and most importantly work that can capture the imagination of any audience with an unwavering ambition to bring larger audiences to dance. Jane has created work for Glastonbury Festival, Sky 1’s Got to Dance, Ferrari, Budlight, Mastercard, BBC Shorts, ITV, Various Music videos, off broadway productions, fashion shows and various events and tours across the UK.

Why Beyond Repair Dance?

In a nutshell, to entertain…. I believe dance can tell stories like no other art form, eliciting an emotion, a reaction and a very human connection to the performance. The aim is to bring this to mass audiences and stepping away from the exclusive nature of contemporary dance, if you are telling a compelling story…..give more people an opportunity to hear it.

Why Beyond Repair Dance?

I quickly developed a passion for the work that the company produces, the ability to stand out and be different in an industry that encourages dancers to put themselves in a box. Every aspect of the company celebrates the individual and nurtures our own identities, encouraging us to develop and grow with confidence. Who wouldn’t want to be a part of that?? When I stand amongst the company I feel empowered by the artists around me to strive for greater results both in performance and creation. The company feels like home to me now.
